Pyecombe Stile Replacement

This week we replaced the derelict style at TQ 28825 12981 with an oak  kissing gate.

This is a Memorial Gate for Cressida Wheelwright, the partner of our member Dave Bennett. She was a botanist and the site was chosen specifically for its views over the Downs and the abundance of wildflowers which Cressida loved.

Access to the site is through a horse field up the very steep side of the roughly western escarpment of Wolstonbury hill. Initially the owner of the field would not allow permission to drive up to the installation site saying that it was impossible and too dangerous and that her father had turned a tractor over attempting it. With our previous experience of getting Don’s truck to seemingly impossible sites we disagreed and the owner eventually relented proving that our assessment was correct with Don driving the truck right next to the installation site.

The Gate is being sponsored by Dave Bennett
