Barcombe: Extending a Bridge

This popular path at Barcombe Cross crosses a stream in the cutting of the old Lewes to Chailey railway and was bridged by the Monday Group some years ago.
Since then the stream has expanded (see photo) and we were asked by the Parish Council if we could extend the bridge.
Arranging access has been very difficult in both finding the landowner and with getting permission – and with the stream being a long walk from any parking.
The materials needed were carried in over 2 mornings and then we took a team of 8 volunteers to first of all clear a dam that was holding the water,  then build extensions on both sides of the old bridge, with the handrail also extended.
We also managed to remove 2 fallen trees nearby that were making access difficult.
Wading around in lots of mud seemed to add to what was a very enjoyable and satisfying morning’s work!
